If you listen to the wind through the trees, the water as it laps the shore, the sounds of nature do you hear music? A bird singing, the death of a rabbit as it screams. Is it Music? The wail of family grieving who has just suffered unbearable loss from an accident, unjust happening or the laughter brought about with the true interaction of love and affection. Do you hear music?

Music holds in its roots the promise that we will not forget a story, of love, or loss, a world gone unjust or a victory from the tyrant. Music is tribal by nature. Music is the storyteller of the good life, the bad seed, the love lost or the man just screwed me!

Is it possible that the efforts to make every note perfect, every recording pristine we lose? We try to force and control in many cases the very elements that make music what music is, tribal, emotional beautiful, painful, and passionate...

Is perfection the poison? The perfect recording takes, the perfect sound, the perfect song. If that’s where the level of acceptance for music has ended up we lose. If it is the perfect that has become the standard for social acceptance we lose. There is no perfect! Too many people think they’re perfect. We are far from perfect socially and have a long way to travel.

Consider the live recordings done at the Fillmore. Consider the Sex Pistols in front of a crowd of 40 in a small town in 1976 consider the live Music of Montreux and consider the Newport Folk Festivals, Woodstock and the list goes on and on. Perfect? Hardly perfect, but tribal to say the least. And because of the attempts to achieve perfection has the music suffered even at more recent notable events such as these?

The powerful are polluting our planet and our music as well. They are well aware that music has always been the catalyst for social change for the better of the many when our society becomes unjust. It is the music that warns the masses about the unjust conditions as they develop within the tribe. I wonder, is that where the saying “Face the Music” has its origins? Oh how I love the music, I just can’t wait for the music.

So go out and see a live music show soon and do it in masses.
